Question from "Anonymous":
I once heard that there is a different tradition in Vietnam than the US for when a child looses their first tooth. Instead of putting their tooth under the pillow and waiting for the tooth fairy, what do Vietnamese children do with their lost first tooth?
Answer:
Dear Anonymous,
This is a tough question. I almost forgot that Vietnamese had such a "custom" in the case of a child's baby tooth.
I don't think we practice such a "tradition" any more . I remember when I lost my milk tooth, my mother helped me throw it up on the roof. Obviously, now aday, with high rise and multiple stories house, it's not that easy any more (smile).
Other countries in Asia such as China, Korea, Singapore also practice this custom. Taiwan is even a bit more "picky" about this . For an upper tooth, they throw it on the roof, and for a lower (jaw) tooth, they throw it under the bed.
Thank you for asking,
Vinh
